Early Life and Youth Career
Lautaro Martínez was born in Bahía Blanca, a port city in southern Argentina. He grew up in a family with a deep passion for football — his father was also a professional player. Lautaro originally pursued a career in basketball but ultimately chose football, inspired by his father and Argentine legends like Gabriel Batistuta and Sergio Agüero.
At the age of 17, Lautaro joined the youth academy of Racing Club, one of Argentina’s biggest football teams. He quickly rose through the ranks thanks to his physical strength, intelligent movement, and goal-scoring instinct. By 2015, he made his debut for Racing’s senior team.
Rise at Racing Club
Between 2015 and 2018, Martínez became one of the most promising young forwards in South American football. He scored 27 goals in 60 appearances for Racing Club and earned international attention. Clubs from Europe began scouting him, but it was Inter Milan who secured his signature in 2018 for a reported €25 million.
Career at Inter Milan
Lautaro joined Inter Milan ahead of the 2018–19 season. His adaptation to European football was swift. Initially used as a substitute, he soon became a regular starter under Antonio Conte, forming a deadly partnership with Romelu Lukaku.
In the 2020–21 season, Lautaro played a key role in helping Inter win their first Serie A title in 11 years. With his pressing, finishing, and relentless energy, he quickly became a fan favorite. He continued to shine even after Lukaku’s departure, stepping up as the team’s primary striker.
By the 2023–24 season, Lautaro was appointed club captain, highlighting his importance both on and off the pitch. He has now scored over 120 goals for Inter, placing him among the club’s all-time top scorers.
International Career with Argentina
Lautaro Martínez made his senior debut for Argentina in 2018. Since then, he has been an integral part of the national team setup.
He was a starter during Copa América 2019, and two years later, he helped Argentina win the Copa América 2021, scoring crucial goals along the way. He was also part of the team that won the Finalissima 2022 against Italy at Wembley and played in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where Argentina were crowned world champions.
Despite tough competition up front, Lautaro has remained a key figure in Argentina’s attacking force, known for his chemistry with Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez.
